DES MOINES – The Iowa Civil Rights Commission will hold its 5th Annual Iowa Civil Rights Symposium and 2nd Build It Right Iowa Conference on Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Meadows Events and Conference Center, 1 Prairie Meadows Drive, Altoona, Iowa 50009.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Iowa Civil Rights Symposium will host presentations on a variety of topics, including compliance with anti-discrimination laws in the areas of employment, public accommodation, education, and housing. This year’s Symposium will feature a discussion by University of Iowa music professor Dr. Damani Phillips on the influence of African American music on the civil rights movement. This discussion will be illustrated by live musical performances by Dr. Phillips and his combo.
From 8:30 to 11:45 a.m., the Build It Right Iowa Conference will present an overview of the seven major design and construction requirements under the Iowa Civil Rights Act and Fair Housing Act. This discussion will address common deficiencies, practical solutions for implementation of the design and construction requirements, and the procedure for detecting and remedying deficiencies.
There is a small fee for the Symposium, with lunch included for participants who register by October 20, 2017. In addition, continuing education credit may be available for certain disciplines.
