Fair Housing Training: "Disability, Dogs, and Doors"

The Iowa Civil Rights Commission will be presenting two Fair Housing Workshops: "Build It Right IOWA" and "Assistance Animals." These workshops will be offered on April 7, 2017 at the Sioux City Public Museum, 607 Fourth Street, Sioux City, Iowa 51101 and on April 28, 2017 in the Whipple Auditorium at the Cedar Rapids Public Library, 450 Fifth Street Southeast, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401. Drinks and snacks may be available for attendees, but lunch will not be provided. Please register here.

Build It Right IOWA

9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Registration opens at 9:00 a.m.

Commission Investigator Emigdio López-Sanders will conduct this training for architects, developers, builders, and building officials. He will address each of the “accessibility” requirements for the design and construction of multifamily housing. He will describe the Commission’s procedures for detecting and remedying deficiencies.

Assistance Animals

1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Registration opens at 12:30 p.m.

Commission Investigator Linda Grathwohl will conduct this training for property owners and managers. She will address reasonable accommodation for tenants with disabilities who require assistance animals. She will explain the differences between “service” animals permitted in public places and “assistance” animals permitted in dwellings.
