Approved Minutes – Meetingofthe Iowa Civil Rights Commission, September 18, 2020

 

I.                   Roll Call -  

Commissioners: Angela Jackson, Doug Oelschlaeger, Marcelena Ordaz, Sam Kooiker, Justin Johnston.

 

II.                 Recognition of Staff, Public, and Press

Staff:Elizabeth A. Johnson (Executive Director), Charles Hill (Supervisor), Sierra Walker (Civil Rights Specialist), Samantha Nordstrom (Civil Rights Specialist), Andrew Stutz (Civil Rights Specialist), Amy Quail (Civil Rights Specialist), Brenna Bormann (Civil Rights Specialist), Tania Lefevre (Civil Rights Specialist), Katie Fiala (Assistant Attorney General), Stephanie Adkisson (Civil Rights Specialist), Thomas Collins (Civil Rights Specialist), SueAnn Johnson (Civil Rights Specialist).

 

III.              Approval of Minutes -

            IV.      Executive Director’sReport

a.                   Update on office status during COVID-19.

b.                  Update on staffing by Charles Hill.

c.                   Update on the first meeting of the ICRC book club.

d.                  Discussion on possibly CLE in the fall.

e.                   Discussion on possible monthly newsletter.

f.                    Update on status of federal contracts.

g.                   Update on social media and outreach by Sierra Walker.

 

V.              Litigation and Case Law Update

 

VI.              Legislative Update on HF2647

a.       Director’s comments on the effects of HF2647 and on the ICRC working with Iowa law enforcement agencies to assist in bias training.

b.      Commissioner Jackson’s comments on HF2647 and the Commission’s role in working with communities all over the state.

 

VII.           CommissionersReports–

a.                   Commission Jackson: Provided information regarding upcoming 21-Day Equity Challenge through United Way.

b.                  Commissioner Oelschlaeger: Nothing to report.

c.                   Commissioner Ordaz: Nothing to report.

d.                  Commission Kooiker: Nothing to report.

e.                   Commissioner Johnston: Nothing to report.

VII.    Next commission meeting scheduled for November 6, 2020, at 1:30 PM.

 

VIII.         Call to adjourn. Motion to approve as made by Commissioner Kooiker, seconded by Commissioner Oelschaeleger. Approved by roll call vote. Motion carried.
