Minutes – June 23, 2017 Meeting of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission

I.Roll Call: Jackson (Chair), Haugh, Hosford, Lipski, Oelschlaeger, Ordaz

Staff: Director Johnson, James Harris, Jayna Grauerholz

Public/Press: David Walker, Russ Lovell, Chris Winter

II.Minutes from 4-6-17 presented. Motion by Oelschlaeger, seconded by Hosford to approve minutes from 4-6-17; motion approved.

III.Commissioners’ Reports – No reports, but newly appointed commissioners Ordaz and Haugh stated they were looking forward to working on the Commission. 

IV.Director’s Report – Director Johnson updated Commissioners on staffing changes, including new employees and the search for a new supervisor following the retirement of Don Grove. She informed the commission she had spent past few days in Sioux City at a round table discussion with law enforcement staff and representatives of various minorities, discussing race and ethnicity. 

V.Public comment – David Walker and Russ Lovell of the NAACP Legal Redress Committee informed the Commission they were planning to petition to change the rules under the Iowa Civil Rights Act. The change would involve the rules regarding confidentiality and disclosure of information. They stated that the committee is still in the processing of preparing the proposed rule changes. Commissioner Jackson asked Walker and Lovell to come back to the Commission and share updates. 

Kris Winter, the current chair of Friends of Iowa Civil Rights, gave an overview of the organization. She recently took over as chair. She discussed the organization’s activities, including fundraising, educational events, and recruitment efforts. 

VI.Next meeting will be on Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Grimes Building at 2:00 pm. 

At approximately 4:00 pm, Commissioner Oelschlaeger moved that the Commission adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Hosford, motion approved unanimously.
